Including your dog in a newborn photo shoot can result in some of the most heartwarming, unforgettable images. But how do you prepare for a successful session? Here are my top tips to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience in a pet-friendly photo studio in San Diego.

1. Introduce Your Dog to the Baby’s Scent

Before the session, help your dog adjust to the newest family member by introducing them to the baby’s scent. Let them sniff a blanket or onesie your newborn has used. This simple step builds familiarity and reduces anxiety when they meet in person.

2. Practice Commands

A well-trained dog is key to a successful newborn session. Refresh basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "leave it." If your dog isn’t used to new environments or camera flashes, practice these at home to build their confidence. A few simple commands can make all the difference in capturing that perfect shot!

3. Walk the dog before the photo shoot

Dogs, like babies, have natural rhythms. To ensure your pup is calm and cooperative, make sure you walk your dog before your photo shoot. Exercising your dog before the session allows them to release excess energy, making them more relaxed and patient during the shoot.

4. Bring a Handler

If possible, bring a friend or family member who can supervise and manage your dog whenever they’re not actively being photographed.

5. Stay Calm and Keep the Energy Positive

Your dog looks to you for emotional cues, so if you’re nervous, they might be too. Staying calm and positive reassures them that this is a fun and safe experience. My approach as a San Diego newborn photographer is to keep sessions lighthearted and stress-free for everyone involved.

6. Provide a Safe Space for Breaks

Even the most well-behaved dogs need a break. Having a designated area where they can relax—whether it’s a cozy dog bed or a separate room—ensures they don’t get overstimulated.

7. Use Soft Background Noise

Babies and dogs respond well to soothing sounds. Playing white noise or gentle music can help create a relaxed atmosphere, minimizing sudden distractions and ensuring a smoother session.

8. Bring a Favorite Toy or Comfort Item

A favorite toy or blanket can provide a sense of security for your dog. Not only does it help them feel at home, but it can also be a sweet, sentimental addition to your portraits.

9. Grooming and Shedding Considerations

A little grooming before the session goes a long way. Brushing your dog beforehand helps reduce shedding and keeps your baby's blankets fur-free. However, avoid a full grooming appointment right before the session, as it may make some dogs more energetic than usual.

10. Capture Candid Moments

Some of the most touching photos happen when dogs naturally interact with their newborn sibling. Let your pup sniff, lay nearby, or simply be in the frame—these authentic moments tell a story of love and connection.

11. Consider Digital Composites for Energetic Dogs

If your dog is too energetic or struggles to stay still, don’t worry! A great alternative is to capture separate images of your baby and your pup and then create a digital composite in Photoshop. This technique allows us to merge the two images seamlessly, ensuring a stunning and safe final portrait without stressing your pet or newborn.

12. Trust Your Photographer

If you’re working with a professional newborn photographer, trust their expertise. They’ll guide you on how to position your dog safely and suggest creative ways to capture beautiful moments.

A newborn session is about more than just capturing beautiful images—it’s about preserving your family’s love story, including the four-legged members who have been there from the start. If you're ready to book your San Diego newborn photo shoot with dogs, I would love to create lasting memories for your family.
