Pregnancy is one of life's most beautiful and transformative journeys. Between preparing the nursery, attending doctor's appointments, and dreaming about meeting your baby, the months can seem to pass by in a blur. Before you know it, your little one will be in your arms, and this extraordinary chapter of your life will become a cherished memory.
One of the most common questions expecting mothers ask is: "When is the best time for maternity photos?"
As an experienced San Diego maternity photographer, I recommend scheduling your maternity photography session between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this stage, your baby bump is beautifully round and prominent, while most moms still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the experience and move freely during the session.
However, every pregnancy is unique, and several factors can influence the ideal timing for your maternity photos. In this guide, I'll explain exactly when to schedule your session and how to ensure you capture stunning portraits you'll treasure forever.

The goal of maternity photography is to celebrate the beauty of motherhood and document the anticipation of welcoming your baby. Timing plays a crucial role in creating elegant, flattering images.
If your session is scheduled too early, your baby bump may not be fully visible. If it's scheduled too late, you may feel more uncomfortable, experience swelling, or face the possibility of your baby arriving before the session.
Finding the perfect balance ensures that you feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable while showcasing your pregnancy in the most flattering way possible.
The Ideal Time for Maternity Photos: 28–34 Weeks
For most expecting mothers, the sweet spot for maternity photography falls between 28 and 34 weeks.
During this period:
This timeframe allows us to create a variety of poses and artistic images without placing unnecessary strain on you.
At ABL Photography, many of our clients schedule their maternity sessions around 30–32 weeks, which often provides the perfect combination of a prominent baby bump and physical comfort.

If you're carrying twins or multiples, I usually recommend scheduling your maternity session between 24 and 30 weeks.
Twin pregnancies often progress more quickly, and mothers may experience greater physical discomfort earlier in pregnancy. By planning your session sooner, we can ensure you're comfortable while still capturing the beautiful curves of your growing belly.

Every pregnancy is different. Many mothers notice that they begin showing earlier during subsequent pregnancies.
If this is your second, third, or fourth baby, your bump may be beautifully visible before the 28-week mark. Depending on your body type and personal preferences, we may schedule your maternity session slightly earlier.
As your photographer, I always take your individual situation into account to recommend the timing that will work best for you.
Although your session may take place during the third trimester, it's best to book your photographer much earlier.
Many luxury maternity photographers in San Diego have limited availability, especially during peak seasons such as spring, summer, and fall. Waiting until the last minute may significantly reduce your options.
I recommend contacting your San Diego maternity photographers during your second trimester, ideally between 12 and 20 weeks.
Booking early allows time for:
Many clients who reserve their maternity session early also secure their newborn session at the same time, ensuring continuity in style and availability.

Every pregnancy is unique, but one thing remains constant: these moments pass incredibly quickly.
