A complete guide for expecting parents
Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most beautiful and emotional moments. Those first days are filled with tiny details: delicate eyelashes, curled-up toes, and the peaceful way a newborn sleeps in your arms. A professional newborn photo session preserves these fleeting moments forever.
As a newborn photographer with over 16 years of experience, I have guided hundreds of families through their baby’s first portrait session. If you’re expecting and wondering what the experience is like, this guide will walk you through exactly what to expect during a newborn photo shoot, from timing and preparation to the final artwork that will decorate your home.
The best time for newborn photography is within the first two weeks after birth.
During this stage, babies are naturally very sleepy and still love curling up into those adorable womb-like poses. This allows for a smoother session and a wider variety of portraits.
After the two-week mark, babies become more alert and less flexible. At this stage, common newborn changes such as colic or baby acne can also develop, which can make traditional newborn posing more challenging.
Because of this small window of time, most parents reserve their newborn session during pregnancy to guarantee availability.
Newborn photography is a gentle and patient process. A typical session in my studio lasts around three hours.
This allows plenty of time for:
Feeding breaks
Soothing and settling the baby
Diaper changes
Carefully preparing each setup
Perfecting every pose
For twins and multiples newborn photography sessions may take a little longer.
I always remind parents that we take our time because perfection takes patience. The goal is a calm, relaxed experience for both baby and parents.
New parents are often exhausted, so I have designed my studio to feel like a peaceful, comfortable retreat during your baby’s first photo session.
Your experience includes:
Beautiful outfits provided for both moms and babies
A curated collection of luxury props from around the world
A cozy studio environment with a comfortable couch for new parents to take a nap
Snacks and drinks for parents
A trained assistant dedicated to newborn safety and efficiency
Parents can simply relax while we take care of every detail.
Preparing for your newborn photo shoot is simple and stress-free.
Here are a few tips that help the session go smoothly:
Try to keep your baby awake before the session if possible.
Giving your baby a bath before leaving home can help make them sleepy.
Feed your baby right before you leave for the studio.
A full and sleepy baby helps us move smoothly through the session and capture those peaceful newborn poses.
Safety is the most important part of any newborn session.
I always work alongside an experienced assistant who is present throughout the entire session. This allows us to focus fully on keeping your baby safe while also creating beautiful images efficiently.
Newborn posing is never forced. The poses we create depend on:
How sleepy the baby is
The baby’s flexibility
Their temperament that day
I always tell parents with a smile, “Your baby is the boss!”
Parents can select their preferred colors and styling for the session, but the poses are always guided by what the baby is comfortable with.
My style is simple, classic, and timeless.
I love working with:
Organic textures
Wooden props
Earthy tones
Soft, natural styling
My goal is to keep the focus on the baby and create portraits that will still feel elegant and beautiful decades from now.
During your session, we may photograph:
Half-wrapped poses
Fully wrapped poses
Poses in an outfit
Bean bag poses
Prop setups
Family portraits
Sibling portraits
Every session is customized to the baby and the parents’ color preferences.
Parents often worry that their baby won’t cooperate during the session.
After more than 16 years of working with newborns, I’m proud to say I have never had to reschedule a newborn session.
Between my experience and my amazing assistant, we have many soothing techniques that help babies stay calm and comfortable. Over the years, parents have jokingly called me a “baby whisperer” and asked me to come to their house at night to help rock their baby to sleep!
The truth is that patience, experience, and understanding newborn behavior make all the difference.
Absolutely, and I highly encourage it!
These images become some of the most meaningful portraits families will ever own.
To keep the session smooth and stress-free, I typically photograph the baby first, then invite siblings and parents to join for family portraits during the last hour of the session.
This approach keeps younger siblings happy and makes the experience enjoyable for everyone.
After your session, we schedule a private ordering appointment at the studio.
During this appointment, parents will:
View their images on a large screen
Select their favorite portraits
Choose their final collection
The studio features a beautiful selection of museum-quality prints, luxury albums, and wall art samples. Seeing and touching the artwork in person helps families choose pieces that will look stunning in their homes. These portraits are designed to become family heirlooms for generations.
One of my favorite moments happened with a first-time mom who arrived very nervous. She was worried her baby wouldn’t cooperate during the session.
But once we started, her little one slept peacefully through pose after pose like a tiny angel. As the session went on, I could see the tension leave her shoulders, and she began to truly relax and enjoy the experience.
Another moment I always love is when siblings meet their new baby in front of the camera. Those nose-to-nose newborn portraits with siblings have become one of my signature images, and they are always parents’ favorites as well.
Sometimes parents request a specific pose they’ve seen and loved. If the baby needs extra patience, we simply try again later in the session. When we finally capture that perfect image, seeing the parents light up makes all the effort worth it.
Newborns change incredibly quickly. In just a few weeks, those tiny curled poses and sleepy expressions begin to disappear.
A professional newborn session preserves this beautiful stage of life so you can remember exactly how tiny your baby once was.
If you are expecting and would like to learn more about creating timeless newborn portraits for your family, I would love to help you plan your session.
Newborn sessions are best reserved during pregnancy, as availability is limited.
Your baby will only be this little once and these moments deserve to be remembered forever!
